One of the more surprising albums and bands I've come across this year, is The Octopus Project and their album Hello, Avalanche released by Peek-a-Boo Records. They're a band of four from Austin, Texas and play rather, manic noisy electronic pop and rock in a sonic field of bliss. Entirely of instrumentals apart from the last track Queen, it kind of pin points the message of the songs without having any lyrical content, other than interpretation provided by the title of the track and its instrumentation and tempo. Co-produced by Ryan Hadlock, whose worked with the likes of Blonde Redhead and The Gossip; The Octopus Project aimed at undermining the balance between lo-fi experimentation and studio polished sound to make Hello, Avalanche. This album captures the aestheticism of art within music; both aurally astonishing and intriguingly illusional.
